New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total vehicles - Short term

• Trend - The May 2008 estimate for new motor vehicle sales (88 603) decreased 0.6% when compared with April 2008. The trend estimate has been decreasing from January 2008. When compared with May 2007, the trend estimate increased by 2.0%.
• Seasonally adjusted - The May 2008 estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (87 821) decreased by 1.6% compared with April 2008.

• Trend - When comparing May 2008 with April 2008, trend estimates decreased for sports utility vehicles, 0.8%, passenger vehicles, 0.7%, and other vehicles, 0.2%. When compared with the same period 12 months ago, passenger vehicles fell by 3.0% while other vehicles and sports utility vehicles rose 10.6% and 9.2% respectively.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing May 2008 with April 2008, other vehicles and sports utility vehicles decreased by 7.8% and 4.0% respectively, while passenger vehicles increased by 1.6%.

• Trend - When comparing May 2008 with April 2008, six of the states and territories showed decreases in the trend estimate of total sales of new motor vehicles. The largest decreases were in Queensland, 1.3%, the Australian Capital Territory, 1.1%, New South Wales, 0.9%, and Tasmania, 0.9%. The Northern Territory and Victoria showed increases of 0.4% and 0.1% respectively.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing May 2008 to April 2008, five of the states and territories showed decreases in total sales. The largest decreases were in Tasmania, 11.5%, followed by Queensland, 9.1%, Western Australia, 5.8%, and the Northern Territory, 3.9%. Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia showed increases of 2.6%, 2.3% and 1.8% respectively.
